The portals are dangerous. There are far more people disappearing through them than we realize.

AAt least that's what they say on the message boards on the Net. But you know how things like that spread online.
The same people seeing them over and over. The stories become familiar. Frequently told amongst friends over a beer. Friends that were all on the same message boards. Surely everyone knew about this right? Why would anyone use the portals, it’s so obvious how dangerous they are.
Then the next weekend one of them would be traveling by portal because—did they really believe, deep down, that they could be that dangerous?
And besides, they had to go! Have you seen Iceland this time of year?

Then one day a child that lives in my building disappears and the parents come to me, their friendly neighborhood P.I. I'm also a disgraced detective and mostly drunken mess, but that's neither here nor there.
Why would they come to me? Probably because I'm the best they can afford. Which also explains why the actual authorities are doing fuck-all to help.
